Tucson, AZ – Habitat for Humanity and Watershed Management Group have partnered to develop graywater demonstration projects at 5 Habitat homes in the Tucson Community. Volunteers led by Watershed Management Group learn while installing graywater plumbing and landscape features at Habitat homes to divert bathroom shower, bathroom sink, and laundry water to irrigate outdoor plants. The graywater is used to support food producing trees at each home. These trees will feed families, shade homes, and beautify landscapes while conserving potable water conventionally used to irrigate outdoor landscapes.
Habitat for Humanity is a recipient of a Tucson Water grant to provide graywater demonstration sites in coordination with the City of Tucson’s new residential graywater ordinance. The new ordinance requires the installation of graywater stubouts on all new residential home construction. The graywater systems installed at the 5 Habitat homes in partnership with WMG showcase a branched-drain method to distribute graywater to the landscape. A branched-drain system is a simple, affordable, gravity-fed method that also minimizes long-term maintenance costs.
Members of the community interested in participating in a joint workshop with Habitat for Humanity and Watershed Management Group should contact Patty with Habitat for Humanity at (520) 326-1217.
