Students and teachers will have the opportunity to learn valuable skills for water harvesting and will increase their awareness of the crucial role water plays in a desert environment. The School Yard Program, a collaboration between WMG and the US Department of Fish and Wildlife, will emphasize the creation of native habitat areas on campuses and will implement water harvesting techniques through hands-on activities, including the creation of a rain garden. Topics such as the hydrologic cycle, water conservation, rainwater and greywater harvesting, native gardening, pollinators, and monitoring of systems will be addressed via an integrated educational component over the course of the program.
Watershed Management Group (WMG), a Tucson-based non-profit organization, is currently accepting applications to implement water harvesting and rain garden projects at two Tucson area schools for the 2009-1010 school year. All program costs will be covered by grant funds provided by the US Fish and Wildlife Service. Applications and full details on the program are now available on WMG’s website at www.watershedmg.org. Applications are due by June 30th.
